Reviews :

“Gil Evans' second album as a leader (a World Pacific set that has been reissued by Blue Note) features his reworking of eight jazz classics including "St. Louis Blues," "Lester Leaps In" and "Struttin' with Some Barbecue." Evans' charts utilize three trumpets, three trombones, a french horn, a prominent tuba, one reed player, altoist Cannonball Adderley and a four-piece rhythm section. Most memorable is a classic rendition of "King Porter Stomp" featuring the exuberant altoist Cannonball Adderley, who is the main soloist on most of the selections. Other key voices include Evans' piano, guitarist Chuck Wayne and trumpeter Johnny Coles. This is near-classic music that showed that Gil Evans did not need Miles Davis as a soloist to inspire him to greatness.” AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow

"The titles for the Tone Poet series, handpicked by Harley with input from Blue Note president Don Was, cover lesser-known releases from both the classic and modern Blue Note eras as well as labels like Pacific Jazz, World Pacific, and Solid State... Gil Evans' 1958 album, New Bottle, Old Wine, is an overlooked masterpiece. Sandwiched between Evans' landmark collaborations with Miles Davis in 1957 (Miles Ahead) and 1959 (Porgy & Bess), it was originally issued on Pacific Jazz. Evans' second album as a leader features his 14-piece band on polished renditions of W.C. Handy's 'St. Louis Blues' and Jelly Roll Morton's 'King Porter Stomp', both enhanced by Cannonball Adderley's exuberant alto sax solos and fleshed out with Evans' unique horn orchestrations. There's also a dynamic updating of Lil Hardin Armstrong's 'Struttin' With Some Barbecue'. Evans puts a new suit of clothes on Lester Young's 'Lester Leaps In', with Cannonball burning white hot and guitarist Chuck Wayne chipping in a fleet-fingered solo, and delivers inventive takes on Dizzy Gillespie's 'Manteca' and Thelonious Monk's 'Round Midnight'. The album closes with a bristling romp through Charlie Parker's 'Bird Feathers'." - Bill Milkowski, The Absolute Sound, July/August 2019

"New Bottle Old Wine comes from Blue Note's acquisition of the catalog of World Pacific Records, an L.A. label that set the template for the cool jazz sound. This 1958 recording, though, is as hot as they come. Led by the arranging skills and piano playing of Evans, a marvelous ensemble runs through eight songs that were, even then, considered part of the standard repertoire. That included W.C. Handy's classic 'St. Louis Blues' and the Charlie Parker tune 'Bird Feathers.' Key to this recording was the inclusion of bona fide masters like drummer Art Blakey, saxophonist Cannonball Adderly, and secret weapon guitarist Chuck Wayne, all of whom toss gasoline on an already roaring fire with their solos." - Paste Magazine, Record Time: New & Notable Vinyl Releases, June 2019
