            Reviews:

“The lead track and fourth Top Five single taken from Michael Jackson's Thriller album, "Wanna Be Startin' Something" starts off the best-selling LP of all time with a nod to the freewheeling, cross-cultural disco feel of Jackson's previous album, Off the Wall. The rhythm arrangement (by the Prince of Pop himself) is a complex interweaving of drum-machine patterns and work by percussionist Paulinho da Costa, while the horn arrangement by Jerry Hey is brassy and precise. The entire production, by Quincy Jones and Jackson, is a hallmark of the digital-quality productions that ruled the '80s (and gradually turned into soulless engineering demonstrations). While the music is effervescent and buoyant, the lyrics introduce a confrontational edge, especially compared to Jackson's previously lily-white persona.” AllMusic Review by John Bush

“To pad out the 25th Anniversary reissue of Thriller, Michael Jackson asked the likes of Kanye West, Will.i.am and Akon to remix classic tracks from the album. It always felt a bit wrong – like inviting a group of spoiled toddlers to "improve" the Crown Jewels with papier-mâché and plasticine – and the results were a real pig's ear.

Akon's reworking of 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' replaces the original's skittish funk will mellow piano lines and dated carnival beats, his squawking vocals acting as a distraction from the main event: Jackson himself. It's a dull rather than dreadful effort, notable only for achieving something most pop fans would have thought impossible: making those famous "mama-se mama-sa mama-kusa"s sound a bit tired and lifeless.” Music Single Review by Nick Levine
