Review:

« Recorded live in Basel, Switzerland on May 4, 2010, Resonance features the original line-up of the legendary prog rock supergroup Asia in concert during their Omega tour. This is an older but no less adept Asia -- grounded by vocalist/bassist John Wetton's still powerful vocal chops -- performing a cross-section of their ambitious songs that mix a hard rock intensity and classical virtuosity with a catchy, melodic songcraft. The band's 2010 studio album, Omega, was the second to feature the original line-up of Wetton, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Geoff Downes, and drummer Carl Palmer since the group shifted personnel in 1983. As such, Resonance features a mix of newer songs off Omega, as well as the band's previous 2008 reunion album, Phoenix. Of course, the band also wisely play many of their most loved '80s hits. To these ends, we get such songs as "Never Again" off Phoenix, "I Believe" and "Finger on the Trigger" off Omega, and "Only Time Will Tell" and "Sole Survivor" off the band's smash 1982 self-titled debut. We also get "Don't Cry" and "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" from 1983's Alpha. Interestingly, although Howe left the band prior to 1985's Astra, we do hear him play on that album's lead-off track "Go." Elsewhere, Howe takes the spotlight on the delicate, acoustic guitar instrumental "All's a Chord," and of course, the band close with their signature 1982 hit "Heat of the Moment." While Asia was successfully led by Downes for many years with a changing roster of members who released several underrated albums, the band always sounded the best with the original line-up. Ultimately, that's what the live Resonance concert delivers. » AllMusic Review by Matt Collar
