“Paul McCartney wrote "Girlfriend" with Michael Jackson in mind. The former Beatle recorded the song on his London Town album. Producer Quincy Jones suggested that Jackson include "Girlfriend" on his Off the Wall LP. While compiling material for his second Epic album, Thriller, Jackson called McCartney to ask if he wanted to collaborate on some songs. Returning the favor, Jackson wrote "The Girl Is Mine" with McCartney in mind. The backing musicians on the track were Greg Phillinganes, David Foster, Toto members Steve Porcaro and Jeff Porcaro, David Paich, Louis Johnson, and Steve Lukather. "The Girl Is Mine" went to number one R&B and parked at number two pop for three weeks in early 1983. It was the first single from Thriller, which topped the R&B/pop charts for 37 weeks, selling over 30 million copies. Jackson and McCartney were reunited on "Say, Say, Say," a 1983 number one pop/number two R&B platinum single. McCartney also had a hit with another Motown veteran, Stevie Wonder, on "Ebony & Ivory," a 1982 number one pop/top ten R&B smash.” AllMusic Review by Ed Hogan
