“I was quite happy when “Cold Hearted” hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 2, 1989. This song brought something new to the table at pop music, yet it still fit in with what was going on at the format at the time. I also appreciated how, at that point in time, the number one singles Paula had showed different sides of the dance pop that she had recorded for her music career. While each song was both dance and pop friendly, and they sounded fresh and not at all formulaic.
