Gustav Mahler's 3rd Symphony, completed in 1896, is the most extensive work in the Austrian composer's oeuvre. The monumental work is a musical portrait of the universe and an attempt to interpret the world. Mahler's Symphony No. 3 places the highest demands on its performers, not only because of its enormous dimensions, but also because of its sonic philosophy.
Zubin Mehta's 1978 Decca recording with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Maureen Forrester as vocal soloist is, for many reasons, one of the most remarkable recordings of the work and is regarded by Mahler connoisseurs and audiophiles alike as an absolute reference recording: the energetic and precise orchestral writing, which avoids any sentimentality, the mature alto voice of the fantastic Maureen Forrester - and not least a consistently overwhelming fullness of sound characterise one of the best Decca recordings of the late analogue era. Remastered from the original tapes by sound engineer Willem Makkee, this historic music and sound experience is now available on hybrid SACD.
