Reviews:
“The first disc of Fitzgerald's second songbook collection, 1956's Sings the Rodgers & Hart Songbook, Vol. 1 finds the singer perfectly at home with the composing duo's warm and witty oeuvre. And while it's not often compared favorably to her stupendous Porter and Gershwin offerings, this collection and its companion volume really deserve to be ranked as one of Fitzgerald's finest hours. Ably displaying her strong yet supple vocal talents, Fitzgerald revels in the maternal glow of ballads like "It Never Entered My Mind" and "Little Girl Blue"; equally savvy with the punchy material, she navigates such brassy swingers as "Johnny One Note" and "Dancing on the Ceiling" with aplomb. Hats off to arranger and conductor Buddy Bregman for his nice mix of romantic string washes and jazz band muscle -- with the occasional flute trill and xylophone accent, he gives it all just the right amount of zippy humor, too. A classic set that's also available as part of a two-disc set covering all of Fitzgerald's Rodgers & Hart recordings.” AllMusic Review by Stephen Cook
