Review :

« Originally released only in Japan, this 1985 LP from pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi's own Ascent label has an early set by the big band that she co-led with Lew Tabackin. The 16-piece group (then based in Los Angeles) features such soloists as Tabackin on tenor and flute, altoists Gary Foster and Dick Spencer, trombonist Bill Reichenbach, trumpeter Bobby Shew, Steve Hufsteter, and (during "Notorious Tourist from East") tenorman Tom Peterson. The five Akiyoshi works are highlighted by the swinging "March of the Tadpoles" (which uses the chord changes of "All the Things You Are"), "Yellow Is Mellow" and the exciting title cut. Although none of the Ascent releases have been reissued as of this writing, this album is well worth searching for. » AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow
